Lesson 1

Luke, the writer of this Gospel account, was a Gentile, and in that the Book is unique. Since Luke was a physician, we find many medical terms throughout. Luke came right out of paganism to Jesus Christ and he tells us about Jesus Christ, who is central and pivotal in human history.

Lesson 2

The teacher gives some helpful background history, geography, and customs behind the town of Nazareth and Mary the mother of our Lord. These bring life and spiritual meaning to her character.

Lesson 3

The key verse in this section is Luke 1:63. We begin with the birth of the forerunner to the Messiah, John the Baptist, whose name means “the grace of God.” We see two songs of thsoe who loved Jesus dearly. Mary’s song speaks of the the God who does great acts. Zacharias sang a song that highlighted the mighty acts of God.

Lesson 4

This study completes the second chapter of Luke. Jesus grew for twelve years and then He advanced for eighteen years. Is there a difference between these? Jesus advanced in wisdom, meaning He had to face problems, He had to seek for information and to find the meaning of things.

Lesson 5

Describing the beginning of John’s ministry, Luke says, “The Word of God came unto John” which is an old Hebrew formula found often in the prophets. Luke dates the fact that the Word of God came to John by using one emperor, one governor, three tetrarchs and two high priests. Did the rite of baptism in John’s ministry bring about the remission of sins?

Lesson 6

This lesson deals with chapter 4 verses 1-13, the temptation of the Lord Jesus Christ, which is Luke’s record of the very first activity of our Lord after dedication and consecration. How did Jesus face temptations? What can we learn from His temptations that will help us with ours?

Lesson 7

In this study we see Jesus dealing with issues and demons with authority. How was His authority different from the Jewish leaders? In what way is His authority available to us today?

Lesson 8

This lesson begins the study of the fifth chapter of Luke. God’s attitude toward faith when it is submissive is that of quick, ready, and immediate response. Why did Jesus send the 10 cleansed lepers back to their priests?

Lesson 9

In this study, completing chapter 5 and beginning chapter 6, includes the calling of Matthew. It was a feast honoring the Lord Jesus Christ, because Matthew was eager that the men of his own class and his own order should be brought into touch with Jesus. Christ did not come to mend but to end the past and to start anew.

Lesson 10

This lesson deals with the final portion of chapter 6. In this chapter Jesus gives a discourse that is similar but different from His Sermon on the Mount recorded in Matthew. He uses two key words: “blessed” and “woe.” What is the significance of these words?

Lesson 11

This lesson completes the study of Luke chapter 7. John the Baptist sent a deputation to Jesus from prison to ask Him questions. As John heard of what Jesus was doing, he was more amazed at what Jesus was not doing. Who were the “poor” Jesus was preaching to?

Lesson 12

This lesson, beginning chapter 8, shows that whenever Jesus preached, His content was the Good News of the Kingdom of God, or Heaven. Is the Kingdom of Heaven and the Kingdom of God one in the same?

Lesson 13

This lesson encompasses chapter 8. Why should the woman not have touched Jesus’ robe? What is the difference between the “kingdom of God” and the “kingdom of heaven?”

Lesson 14

As Jesus leads the disciples all the way up to Ceasarea Philippi, we see that the disciples never moved on Jesus’ level of prayer, He prayed on a different level. While He was praying upon the mountain, what happened to Him? Why?

Lesson 15

The teacher begins with Luke 9:51-62. Luke 10:1-24 is a section in the Gospels that is peculiar to Luke. What is significant here?

Lesson 16

Luke 10:25-42 contains two incidents in Jesus’ life that are full of light and color. In the first, the lawyer wanted to justify himself for breaking Law, so he raised the question of who is my neighbor. In the second, Mary realized that love cannot fully express itself in service, it must take the place of devotion and discipleship.
